Frequently Asked Questions
At what age can cochlear implants be done? +
Children as young as 9–12 months can receive a cochlear implant when they have profound hearing loss. Early implantation through Sankalp Trust Foundation's screening and awareness programs helps children develop speech during critical learning years. Adults who no longer benefit from hearing aids are also eligible after a detailed evaluation with Dr. Sumit Mrig.
Is the surgery safe? +
Yes. Cochlear implant surgery is a well-established procedure performed under general anaesthesia at Max Smart Saket, Max Dwarka, and Sankalp ENT & Cochlear Implant Centre. Dr. Sumit Mrig has completed 700+ successful surgeries with careful pre-operative assessment, sterile surgical protocols, and structured follow-up through activation and rehabilitation.
How long is recovery? +
Most patients go home within 1–2 days. The surgical site typically heals in about two weeks. Device activation happens around 3–4 weeks after surgery, followed by auditory-verbal therapy at Sankalp's centre in Dwarka — part of the long-term support journey outlined on this page from consultation through lifelong care.
Will hearing be fully restored? +
A cochlear implant does not bring back natural hearing, but it opens access to sound that hearing aids cannot provide. With activation, therapy, and ongoing rehabilitation from the Sankalp team, many children hear a parent's voice for the first time and many adults reconnect with conversations and daily life — outcomes reflected in the patient stories shared above.
